Publication Series Design - A very Short Introduction
Project Type: Speculative / Self-Initiated
A redesign of the Very Short Introductions (VSI) series, originally published by Oxford University Press. The series spans a wide range of disciplines, offering concise yet authoritative introductions to complex subjects for a general audience. The project focuses on creating a clear and recognisable visual system for the covers.
Each book is represented by a unique geometric pattern, acting as a condensed visual translation of its content — a “very short introduction” in itself. Typography is kept minimal to foreground the pattern, allowing each cover to communicate through form, rhythm, and colour. Variations in palette, shape, and composition generate a flexible system capable of expanding across the series while maintaining coherence. The design also considers collectability — encouraging readers to see the series as a set, where individual differences contribute to a unified whole.
